There is no single mandatory supplement set for every BARF diet. Whether an additional source may be appropriate and what amount to consider depend on the healthy-adult species profile, products and amounts. Which parameters to assess before adding a supplement

The following parameters often appear in BARF supplementation questions. The result, product contributions, declared composition and available reference values help you or a specialist assess whether another source may be appropriate:

Which of these apply to your bowl depends on the composition — so instead of supplementing "just in case", calculate the dog diet or cat diet first.

Too little or too much — why the dose matters

A supplement is not “the more the better”. Sources may define a minimum, a recommended level or an upper limit, but not every parameter has all three. Excesses of some vitamins and minerals can be undesirable, so dose needs to be assessed in the context of the whole diet.

  • MR — minimum requirement: a result below it may indicate insufficient dietary supply; it is not a diagnosis
  • RA — recommended allowance including a margin
  • SUL — upper boundary: exceeding it needs evaluation and may increase the risk of adverse effects

So the dose is best assessed against the available NRC, FEDIAF and AAFCO thresholds, not taken from a label in isolation. A missing SUL is neither a zero target nor confirmation of an unlimited dose.

What to check with supplements

  • available thresholds and parameters without a defined SUL

What supplements does a BARF diet need?

There is no single list for every recipe. Useful checkpoints include iodine, vitamins D and E, omega-3, the calcium source and taurine for cats. BARFLAB shows the result and product contributions used to assess whether an additional source is needed.

Can you overdo supplements?

Yes. Excesses of some vitamins and minerals can be harmful. BARFLAB shows an available SUL and relevant ratios when the source defines them, but the absence of an upper threshold does not confirm that any dose is safe.

Do I need an all-in-one premix?

That depends on the recipe and the premix’s declared composition. BARFLAB shows how the entered product changes each analysed result and contribution. You or a specialist can then compare that option with individual declared sources.

Do supplements replace balancing the diet?

No. Start with the whole-recipe analysis, then review how an added product changes the result and available reference values. The final choice and amount remain a user or specialist decision.
