🐾 BARF for dogs and cats

Your dog deserves a diet without gaps.

BARFLAB builds and analyses raw, cooked and steamed diets — nutrient by nutrient, with a minimum, an optimum and a safe upper limit for each. You see deficits, excesses and the products that actually move the balance.

How it works

Three steps to a calculated bowl

No spreadsheets, no gluing tables together by hand. Profile, products, analysis — all in one place.

1

Create a pet profile

Weight, body condition, activity, neutering. BARFLAB calculates the energy requirement (DER/RER) and you can override it manually.

Dog profile with energy requirement calculator
2

Add products

Meat, organs, bones, extras and real supplements from the database. Every change recalculates the whole balance instantly.

3

Close the gaps precisely

A red nutrient is not a dead end. You see what is missing, which products carry it and how a change affects the rest of the diet.

Analysis, not guesswork

From warning to decision

A red nutrient is not a dead end. BARFLAB computes 64+ parameters for every diet, and when something falls outside a threshold it shows the sources of the problem and the products that actually move the result.

  • Nutrient sources

Low on calcium? See which products contribute the most and what will actually fix the result.

  • Thresholds built on science

MR, RA and SUL limits derived from NRC 2006, FEDIAF 2021 and AAFCO 2023. Analysis per day, per diet duration and per 1000 kcal.

  • Cooking matters

Cooked and steamed diets use nutrient retention (Bognar 2002) instead of raw-food assumptions.

  • Cats calculated like cats

Taurine, arginine, arachidonic acid, retinol and Ca:P — critical feline nutrients have their own thresholds.

Features

Everything simple calculators are missing

Built for owners who want to know what is really in the bowl.

Real supplements

Products with producer and database values — not an abstract “add calcium”. Estimated values are honestly flagged.

Warnings with context

Not just “manganese too low”. You get an explanation of the problem and where to look for a fix.

BARFLAB Score

One grade for the whole diet on a 0–2000 scale, from S to F. You instantly see whether a change helps or hurts the balance.

Product contribution

Every product has a per-100 g view and its real contribution to the whole diet balance.

Knowledge base

Each nutrient comes with a short explanation: what it does, and what deficiency or excess means.

Multi-day diets

Build a diet for the whole feeding period — gram amounts are calculated for all days, not just one bowl.

BarfSense

It suggests, you decide

While you build a diet by hand, BarfSense can suggest products and gram amounts. You always see the context and the effect of a change — no decisions behind your back.

  • Product suggestions matched to the gaps in the diet
  • Gram proposals with a preview of the balance impact
  • The generator honestly says when a diet cannot be balanced

Comparison

Beyond a simple calculator

Meat, bone and organ percentages are not enough to call a diet balanced.

Simple calculator BARFLAB
BARF ratios yes yes
Micronutrients and vitamins rarely 64+ parameters
Whole-diet grade no Score 0–2000
Upper limits (SUL) no yes
Critical feline nutrients rarely own thresholds
Cooking retention no Bognar 2002
Honestly

A tool, not a magic recipe

Does BARFLAB replace a vet or a veterinary nutritionist? +

No. BARFLAB supports analysing and building diets, but it does not replace a specialist. For illnesses and special needs, consult your vet.

Does it work for cats? +

Yes. Cats are calculated separately, with focus on taurine, arginine, arachidonic acid, retinol and the Ca:P ratio.

What if the generator cannot find a diet? +

That is information too. With the given constraints a diet may be impossible to balance sensibly — BARFLAB does not hide warnings to make the result look better.

Which animals is BARFLAB for? +

Currently healthy adult dogs and cats. Norms for puppies, kittens and animals with medical conditions are a different level of responsibility.
