Magnesium - Mg in dog and cat diets

A short guide to the role of Magnesium - Mg in dog and cat nutrition.

In the body, it works closely with calcium and phosphorus (about 60% of magnesium is found in bones and teeth as a building component). It plays an important role in neuromuscular activity. While calcium is responsible for muscle contraction, magnesium determines their proper relaxation. In addition, it is an activator of over 300 enzymes, supports proper nerve conduction and plays a key role in energy metabolism at the cellular level (production of ATP) [1]. Magnesium absorption may be limited by too high levels of calcium, phosphorus, potassium, protein and fat in the diet. Some medications (diuretics) can cause magnesium to be wasted in the kidneys [2].

What it contains: Muscle meat, hearts, offal [1].

Deficiency: Resulting directly from too little of it in the meat diet, it is rare. Most often, it is a secondary effect of chronic diarrhea or kidney disease. Symptoms include: tetany, convulsions, stunted growth, anorexia, calcification of the kidneys and liver, decreased blood pressure and temperature [2].

Excess: In animals with properly functioning kidneys, excess from the diet does not occur, because the body perfectly copes with its excretion in the urine [1].
